Complementary Enrichment Programs

Movement, Science, Music, and Garden programs are part of the everyday fun in our classes. Fountainhead has specialist teachers who come into the classroom and lead focused circle time for the children and teachers. These additions to our program are covered by our regular tuition, so no additional payment or sign-up is required.

The Movement, Science, Music, and Garden programs are held on the following schedule. The schedule may change without notice.  All classes are held once per week.

Our Movement Program

This program works on basic movement skills and mobility, and refines mobility skills through a range of motor activities involving the entire body. Gross-motor development includes locomotor dexterity, which requires balance and movement, and upper-body and arm skills.  Fountainhead has two Movement teachers.

Vanessa Freeman is currently completing her MFA in Dance at Saint Mary’s College. She holds a BA in Dance through Ottawa University and an AAS in Dance Technology. She began her dance teaching journey ten years ago at a small studio, finished her BA, and continued teaching dance. Vanessa is very excited to invite children at Fountainhead Montessori to enjoy their movement learning experience.

Our other Movement teacher, Terrie Guevarra grew up in the Bay Area and currently lives in San Ramon with her family. Terrie has a Bachelor’s degree in Legal Studies from U.C. Berkeley and an Associate Teacher credential in Early Childhood Education. She is celebrating 10 years of bringing Kinderdance programs to preschools in the Tri-Valley and is very excited about opening her own studio. Kinderdance® is the original nationwide dance, motor development, gymnastics, and fitness program that combines academic readiness skills which are specifically designed for young children.

Our Science Program

In addition to the everyday science portion of our regular classtime this new program focuses on biological, physical, and environmental sciences.   Each week your child will be presented with a new idea or a more in depth analysis from birds, to volcanoes, to trees.

Amy’s goal is to inspire children early on to become interested in learning about science, the environment and stewardship of the natural world around them. She incorporates her science, conservation and gardening expertise with curriculum and activities that are engaging, hands on and fun. She believes in early introductions to a combination of science, math, reading, art and music, in order to spark curiosity and successfully motivate children to be lifelong learners.

Our Music Program - Dublin Campus Only

Carolyn's classes starts with playful exercises to warm up the voice as well as flexing the muscles of the hands which are needed to play instruments. There are plenty of echo songs and rhythms to lay a foundation for matching pitch and playing in a group. The children always love the movement portions of the lesson and they laugh at the funny ways we can move to songs from Mozart, Beethoven, Louis Armstrong, and even The Beatles.

After a while, the children get very skilled at listening to excerpts of music and identifying the various instruments: flutes and tubas and the beautiful strings. Each lesson features a music concept such as slow vs fast and we enjoy learning the correct terminology, such as "largo" and "presto". There are even games for practicing reading music notation ("Let's walk like the 'walking notes' we call quarter notes and now let's run when we hear the eighth notes that will remind us of running.") Of course, the highlight of every class is playing the instruments! There are rhythm sticks, triangles, maracas, along with pitched percussion instruments like Xylophones, Glockenspiels and even tuned Montessori brass bells.

Our Garden Program - Dublin Campus Only

FMS Montessori Garden

Our Garden Program returns in the Fall.  Over the Summer term our children will enjoy the Garden Playground but our full Garden curriculum returns August 31, 2015.  Find out more about our Outdoor Garden Classroom here: magicalmovementcompany.blogspot.com

Every week children from the Primary and Elementary classes will have the opportunity to participate in our specially developed garden curriculum. We will experience nature and the cycles of life through all seasons in our expansive new garden area. Our garden activities will enrich and interconnect with classroom activities throughout the year.  Our Garden Teacher is Mary Cooper, a Fountainhead teacher of almost 30 years and an avid, long time, and learned gardener.

Maria Montessori recognized the importance of exposing children to the natural world and today education specialists are rediscovering what she observed. “Children indeed love flowers, but they need to do something more than remain among them and contemplate their colored blossoms. They find their greatest pleasure in acting, in knowing, in exploring, even apart from the attraction of external beauty.” (Montessori, The Discovery of Childhood). The garden provides innumerable meaningful activities for discovery, from planting seeds to harvesting vegetables, smelling herbs, observing colors, to recording in nature journals. All these activities enhance science and language learning, creativity and FUN.
